Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will appeal to seasoned, newly minted and returning small animal clinicians alike - anyone interested in deepening their understanding of canine and feline vaccinations.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians. This course is approved by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 22-38585)

Course Information:
This basic level course is intended to give a broad overview of the concepts related to canine and feline vaccination. Topics will include the history and mechanism of vaccination, an overview of conditions we vaccinate against, the most up to date recommendations on vaccine scheduling, and a discussion of possible adverse events. This course is primarily directed towards newer graduates and those new to the canine/feline field, but it would also serve as a good refresher for seasoned companion animal practitioners.

Week 1 (Real Time Session June 9, 2020): Vaccinology
Presenter: Thomas Hansen, DVM, DABVP
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • learn more about the history of vaccination.
  • understand the mechanics of vaccination.
  • discuss core vs. non-core decision making.
  • understand the application and potential pitfalls of titres.

Week 2 (Real Time Session June 16, 2020): Feline Vaccination

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • understand the overview of conditions we vaccinate against in the feline patient (etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and management).
  • discuss the feline vaccination schedules.

Week 3 (Real Time Session June 23, 2020): Canine Vaccination

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • understand the basics of conditions we vaccinate against in the canine patient (etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management).
  • discuss the canine vaccination schedules.

Week 4 (Real Time Session June 30, 2020): Adverse Events Associated with Vaccination
Presenter: Thomas Hansen, DVM, DABVP
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • discuss common and uncommon responses to vaccination and their management.

About the Presenter:
Thomas Hansen is a graduate of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Canine and Feline Practice). In addition to serving as a consultant and CE instructor on VIN he is in general and emergency practice in the San Francisco Bay Area. His favorite areas of practice are cats, internal medicine, emergency medicine, and ultrasound.
