Course Information:
In this self-paced course, we will look at all aspects of feline kidney disease from the pathophysiology to treatment options and everything in between. Participants will have a deeper understanding of why things go wrong in kitty kidneys, and how to stay ahead of the problems.

To earn a certificate of completion the participant must complete all learning modules and score 80% or better on the end-of-course test. Completion of the course will take a minimum of 169 minutes. Participants must complete the participation requirements by April 30, 2025 to be eligible for a certificate.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to:
  • Understand the pathophysiology of kidney disease.
  • Understand the role of the kidneys and how they are intertwined with other body functions.
  • Recognize a kitty that has subclinical kidney disease.
  • Expand their options for diagnosing a cat with renal disease.
  • Be more confident in laying out and choosing appropriate treatment options for a patient.
  • Anticipate what might go wrong next.


Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE self-study course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in all aspects of feline kidney disease.
This course is open to VIN members only.
Credit Approval: This non-interactive course is approved for 3 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-933495)

Module 1: Pathophysiology and Consequences of Disease
Total Time: 29 minutes

Description: Establishes definitions and potential causes of chronic or acute disease, as well as the impact to multiple organ systems in the body.


Module 2: Clinical Signs and Diagnosis
Total Time: 31 minutes
Video: 26 minutes
Handouts: 5 minutes
Description: Discussion on IRIS staging, goes through the various diagnostic tools for establishing chronic renal disease.


Module 3: Disease Management
Total Time: 76 minutes
Video: 76 minutes
Description: This section goes through the various treatment options from diet, fluid therapy, supportive medications, and touches on advanced treatment such as transplant. The possible complications of disease management are covered.


Module 4: Acute on Chronic Discussion
Total Time: 16 minutes
Video: 16 minutes
Description: Discussion of the different causes of acute on chronic renal disease, how to differentiate, diagnose, and treatment approach. Establish definitions and potential causes of chronic or acute disease, as well as the impact to multiple organ systems in the body.


Module 5: Anesthesia Considerations
Total Time: 12 minutes
Video: 12 minutes
Description: This segment discusses the special tactics on safely anesthetizing a patient with chronic renal disease.


Module 6: End of Course Test
Total Time: 5 minutes
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.
