Course Information:
Hematological and biochemical interpretation in reptile patients can be challenging to even the most experienced practitioner. The purpose of this two-part series is to help provide guidance in approaching the interpretation of clinical pathology in reptile patients as well as give participants a better understanding of the nuances and huddles that exist with today’s limited knowledge and technology. It will utilize real life examples engaging participants to practice their skills at laboratory interpretation.


Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • compare the differences in interpretation reptile hematology to that of domestic species.
  • recognize various types of blood cells.
  • understand the challenges and limitations of clinical pathological interpretation in reptile patients.
  • come up with tentative diagnoses for common lab results.
  • feel more comfortable providing laboratory interpretation to their clients.


Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians interested in interpretation of hematological and biochemical data for their reptile patients.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 4 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1136246)


Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session May 1, 2024): Reptiles are Filthy Stinkin’ Liars – Hematology
This session will cover reptile hematology including sample collection, processing, cell recognition, and interpretation of results.

Week 2 (Real Time Session May 8, 2024): Reptiles are Filthy Stinkin’ Liars – Biochemistry
This session will cover reptile biochemistry testing including sample collection and interpretation as well as discuss the limitations of running reptile samples on machines designed for mammalian patients.


Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.
