Course RTS Times in Your Area: World Clock Converter Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to veterinarians interested in adding reptiles to their practice or learning more about basic medical care. This course will cover an introduction to reptile medicine, husbandry, history taking, and common medical conditions.

Reptile medicine is an ever-expanding and developing field and contains significant differences from mammalian and avian medicine. This course is intended for veterinarians who wish to add or have just started to add reptiles in their practices. This course will cover the equipment needed to treat reptiles, husbandry of common captive species, restraint, and history taking along with how to perform minor medical procedures, surgery, anesthesia, and common medical conditions of reptiles encountered in practice. Week 1 (Real Time Session March 10, 2021): Introduction to Reptile Medicine

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Determine what equipment is needed to begin treating reptiles in their practice
- Restrain various reptile species safely
- Perform a physical exam and determine gender on various reptile species
- Perform basic procedures such as venipuncture, radiographs, fecal exam, tracheal wash, giving injections, and catheter placement
- Describe common medications used and routes of administration
- Describe various safe sedation and anesthetic protocols and understand the basics of reptilian surgery and anesthesia

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Describe husbandry requirements of common reptile species encountered in practice
- Answer specific questions related to reptile husbandry on topics such as lighting, heating, nutrition, supplements, caging, etc.
- Take a thorough history from a client regarding their reptile patient
- Understand how husbandry and history taking play a large role in medical care of the reptile patient

- Understand and recognize common medical conditions of captive reptiles and describe their etiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention
Required Textbook(s): There is no required textbook for this course. About the Presenter:
Stacey Leonatti Wilkinson graduated with her DVM from the University of Tennessee in 2006. From 2006-2015 she worked as an associate veterinarian at Avian and Exotic Animal Care in Raleigh, NC, a veterinary practice exclusively devoted to the care of exotic pets. In 2013 she became a diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in Reptile and Amphibian medicine. In 2015 she opened Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital of Georgia; a practice also exclusively dedicated to the care of exotic pets. Dr. Wilkinson is also an adjunct assistant professor at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She has been published in scientific and non-scientific journals, written multiple textbook chapters, and lectures nationally on exotic animal medicine and care. She is Treasurer of the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians and is active in the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians and Association of Avian Veterinarians as well.
