This
intermediate level course will be open to veterinarians, veterinary students,
veterinary technicians/technologists, and veterinary support staff actively interested in
medical and surgical management of wild birds suffering from different trauma-induced
wounds and orthopedic disorders.

Course Information:
The primary purpose of this course is to provide a basic to intermediate understanding
of the principles of wound care and orthopedic management of traumatized wild birds.
The course will include details on emergency stabilization procedures for wounded
birds of many different species, euthanasia criteria, practical applications of things
like bandaging, topical medications, autografting, and treatment of head trauma.
It will further cover radiographic interpretation of common injuries, prognosis,
and details on soft tissue and orthopedic surgical management. Multiple videos will
be used to insure understanding of more complex procedures. Poll questions will be
used to insure audience engagement and understanding.
Week 1 (Real Time Session November 14, 2018):
Avian Critical Care

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Provide critical care for emergent, wounded avian patients
- Understand the application of multimodal analgesia in birds
- Provide appropriate hospitalization and supportive care for wounded birds
- Diagnose and treat head trauma
- Understand release criteria
Week 2 (Real Time Session November 28, 2018):
Bandaging & Wound Management
Presenters: Heather W. Barron and Rebecca Duerr
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Apply external coaptation for stabilization of fractures and luxations
- Understand bandaging and management for a wide variety of commonly seen wounds
- Use topical and systemic antimicrobials effectively and appropriately
- Prevent common iatrogenic problems in hospitalized wild birds
Week 3 (Real Time Session December 5, 2018):
Avian Soft Tissue Surgery

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Understand indications for and perform ocular evisceration
- Repair a variety of common wounds in different bird species
- Fishing gear removal
- Entanglement injuries
- Scalping and neck degloving injuries
- General laceration repair
- Passerines
- Doves/pigeons
- Raptors
- Diving species
- Pelicans
- Not enough skin to cover it-advancement grafts, autografting, other techniques
- Components of effective physical therapy for wild birds
Week 4 (Real Time Session December 12, 2018):
Avian Orthopedic Surgery
Presenters: Heather W. Barron and Rebecca Duerr
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Diagnose fractures and luxations radiographically and develop a prognosis
- Manage repair of fractures in different avian species
- Provide appropriate post-operative management and rehabilitation
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenter(s):
Heather Wilson Barron is Hospital Director at the Clinic for
Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) on Sanibel Island, FL. She received training
in exotic and wild animal medicine and surgery through a residency at the
University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine, where she stayed
on as faculty in the Zoological Medicine Service for a decade.
She obtained further international experience as Department Head of Clinical
Medicine at St. Matthew's University, School of Veterinary Medicine in the
Cayman Islands, where she was also the veterinarian for the Cayman Turtle
Farm and Cayman Wildlife Rescue. She has served as a consultant for IDEXX
and Antech Imaging Services and is a former president of the Association
of Avian Veterinarians.
Rebecca Duerr is the clinical veterinarian and research
director at International Bird Rescue's two wildlife clinics in California.
She has over 30 years' experience working with wild species admitted to
rehabilitation from hummingbirds to cetaceans and serves on the Board of
Directors of the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association.
She completed her DVM, MPVM, and PhD degrees at University of California Davis,
with graduate work on the clinical care of oiled Common Murres and on the
nutritional energetics and physiology of Common Murres and Western Grebes.
She recently co-edited the 2nd edition of
Hand-Rearing Birds,
co-edited and wrote several chapters in NWRA's
Topics in Wildlife Medicine,
Vol. 4: Orthopedics, and is gradually getting all her graduate papers
from the intersection of seabird biology and clinical wildlife medicine published.
