This course will focus on avian clinical cases. We will discuss differential diagnoses with likely pathogenesis using evidence-based medicine, development of diagnostic plans, interpretation of clinical data, correlation of histopathologic findings, and excellent case management. - Recognizing the significant clinical signs and Clin Path/Anatomic lesions

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Recognize the significant clinical signs
- Develop a complete DDX based on the signalment, history, and clinical presentation
- Have a step-by-step plan to get a diagnosis with diagnostic imaging and correct sampling techniques for clinical pathology and biopsy samples.
- Provide supportive care and therapy options. These cases are challenging!
- Perform a diagnostic post-mortem on those neurologic birds that don’t make it.

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- List the most commonly encountered causes for a distended coelom in avian species
- Understand proper collection and interpretation of clinical pathology (FNA, CBC, biochemistry, culture, PCR, TTW/ other fluids), radiology, ultrasound, endoscopy and biopsy.
- To determine what samples to collect at necropsy if a definitive answer was not determined antemortem

Drury Reavill is a VIN consultant (Aquatic Animal Medicine Folder) and has 30 years of experience in avian and exotic clinical practice, laboratory diagnostics and pathology. She graduated from Colorado State University's College of Veterinary Medicine in 1986 and practiced at the Avian Medical Center of Sacramento, as well as provided clinical consultation and laboratory services to practitioners through California Avian Laboratory (a national service exclusively devoted to avian and exotic animals) and California Veterinary Diagnostic Labs of West Sacramento. She completed her residency in anatomic pathology (including instruction in zoo pathology and course work at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology) and gained board certification from American College of Veterinary Pathology (ACVP) in 2000. Drury is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, obtaining Avian Practice Certification in 1993 (recertified 2003 and 2013) and Reptile and Amphibian Certification in 2013. Drury has owned and operated Zoo/Exotic Pathology Service for 21 years and has given several VIN courses over the years. Anneliese Strunk graduated from Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000. Dr. Strunk went on to complete an internship in Exotic Animal, Wildlife and Zoo Medicine at the University of Georgia in 2002, followed by a three-year residency in the Companion Avian and Exotic Pet Medicine Service at the University of California at Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in 2005. After completing her residency, Dr. Strunk moved across the country to help start the Avian and Exotics Department at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in Tinton Falls, NJ. She saw primary care and referral avian and exotics cases as both an associate and department head until moving back home to Texas in August 2009. She spent 5 years in Austin at Research Boulevard Pet and Bird Hospital as an associate and Medical Director for Exotics. In 2010, she achieved board certification in Avian Practice through the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP). Dr. Strunk is the author and co-author of a number of articles in both professional journals and national conference proceedings. She is on the advisory board for the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV) and Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV). She is an international speaker, presenting research, clinical case reports, and continuing education lectures at national meetings of the AAV and the ARAV, as well as other national and local meetings in the US and Asia. She has a special interest in surgery, endoscopic techniques, small mammal dentistry, ophthalmology, and teaching. Total CE Credit: 6
