advanced course is geared towards veterinarians interested in reviewing detailed avian cases.

Course Information:
This course will focus on avian clinical cases. We will discuss differential
diagnoses with likely pathogenesis using evidence-based medicine, develop
diagnostic plans, interpret data, correlate histopathologic findings,
and discuss case management.
Week 1 (Real Time Session November 8, 2018):
The Masses (or Lumps and Bumps)
Presenters: Dr. Anneliese Strunk, Dr. Kendal Harr, and Dr. Drury Reavill

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Develop a DDX list based on the species and mass location
- Have a step-by step plan for diagnosing the mass
- Find options for therapy
Week 2 (Real Time Session November 15, 2018):
The Clue is in the Presenting Clinical Signs; DDX vs Diagnosis
Presenters: Dr. Anneliese Strunk, Dr. Kendal Harr, and Dr. Drury Reavill

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Recognize the significant clinical sign.
- Develop a complete DDX based on the signalment, history,
and clinical presentation.
- Have a step-by-step plan to get a diagnosis with correct
sampling techniques and provide therapy options.

Week 3 (Real Time Session November 29, 2018):
The Most Common Infectious Diseases
Presenters: Dr. Anneliese Strunk, Dr. Kendal Harr, and Dr. Drury Reavill
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- List the most commonly encountered infectious diseases in avian species.

- Understand proper collection and interpretation of clinical pathology
and infectious disease samples (FNA, CBC, biochemistry, culture,
PCR, biopsy, TTW/ other fluids). Interpret data with known sample
and testing restrictions and analytical statistics
(e.g. diagnostic sensitivity and specificity).

- Perform correct post mortem sampling to secure a diagnosis.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenters:
Drury Reavill is a VIN consultant (Aquatic Animal Medicine Folder)
and has 30 years of experience in avian and exotic clinical practice, laboratory
diagnostics and pathology. She graduated from Colorado State University's College
of Veterinary Medicine in 1986 and practiced at the Avian Medical Center of Sacramento,
as well as provided clinical consultation and laboratory services to practitioners
through California Avian Laboratory (a national service exclusively devoted to avian
and exotic animals) and California Veterinary Diagnostic Labs of West Sacramento.
She completed her residency in anatomic pathology (including instruction in zoo
pathology and course work at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology) and gained
board certification from American College of Veterinary Pathology (ACVP) in 2000.
Drury is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners,
obtaining Avian Practice Certification in 1993 (recertified 2003 and 2013) and
Reptile and Amphibian Certification in 2013.
Kendal Harr has had an interest in wildlife since she worked at
the New York State Fisheries Diagnostic Laboratory and the Ornithology Lab at
Cornell University in the early 1990s. She graduated from Cornell University College
of Veterinary Medicine in 1995 and, after completing an internship, practiced
as a primary veterinarian for two years in a small animal and exotic species practice.
In 1998, she moved to Gainesville to train as a resident in clinical pathology
at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, winning the first
place in toxicology research at the ACVP for her residency research, and attaining
ACVP board certification. In 2001, she began working as a consulting pathologist
for Florida Vet Path, Inc. Dr. Harr then concurrently completed a M.S. in
comparative immunology and diagnostic assay development in 2004 (Master of Science,
thesis: Diagnostic Development of Acute Phase Proteins in Manatees.
For this work, she won the Excellence in Clinical Research Award from the
University of Florida. She has worked at UF as the Associate Director of
Aquatic Animal Health, worked for the "big labs", and now owns her own
pathology company, URIKA, LLC. She is on an associate editor for the
Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery and reviews for numerous other journals.
Anneliese Strunk graduated from Texas A&M University College
of Veterinary Medicine in 2000. Dr. Strunk went on to complete an internship in
Exotic Animal, Wildlife and Zoo Medicine at the University of Georgia in 2002,
followed by a three-year residency in the Companion Avian and Exotic Pet Medicine
Service at the University of California at Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching
Hospital in 2005. After completing her residency, Dr. Strunk moved across the
country to help start the Avian and Exotics Department at Red Bank Veterinary
Hospital in Tinton Falls, NJ. She saw primary care and referral avian and exotics
cases as both an associate and department head until moving back home to Texas
in August 2009. She spent 5 years in Austin at Research Boulevard Pet and Bird
Hospital as an associate and Medical Director for Exotics. In 2010, she achieved
board certification in Avian Practice through the American Board of Veterinary
Practitioners (ABVP). Dr. Strunk is the author and co-author of a number of
articles in both professional journals and national conference proceedings.
She is on the advisory board for the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian
Veterinarians (ARAV) and Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV).
She is an international speaker, presenting research, clinical case reports,
and continuing education lectures at national meetings of the AAV and the ARAV,
as well as other national and local meetings in the US and Asia.
She has a special interest in surgery, endoscopic techniques, small mammal
dentistry, ophthalmology, and teaching.
