Level and Prerequisites: This advanced course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary support staff interested in the management of honeybee hives for optimal health and production. It is recommended that participants have a basic knowledge of bees and beekeeping terminology.

Course Information:
In this course we will discuss the nutritional needs of honey bees at both the colony and the individual level. We will cover basic yearly management for honey bee colonies with extra focus on areas with a cold winter or prolonged dry season. Participants will learn the basic life stages of a colony over the season, focusing on environmental cues that drive management. We will cover common mistakes at each time of year and will focus on best management practices to optimize honey bee health and nutrition as well as honey crop production.

Week 1 (Real Time Session January 31, 2021): Nutrition

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • List the basic nutritional requirements for honey bees
  • Identify standard sources of food
  • Describe the standard methods of feeding honey bees
  • Identify signs that a colony is in nutritional stress

Week 2 (Real Time Session February 7, 2021): Managing Honey Bees for Health and Production

Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • Describe the beekeeping tasks throughout the season
  • Explain the differences between summer and winter bees
  • Illustrate honeybee winter biology
  • Identify environmental cues that drive management decisions

About the Presenter:
Meghan Milbrath has been keeping bees for over 20 years. She runs a beekeeping business in Munith, Michigan, where she keeps over 200 colonies and breeds queen bees. Dr. Milbrath works as an academic specialist at Michigan State University where she specializes in pollinator research and extension. Her academic focus is on transmission dynamics of environmentally acquired infectious diseases.
