Course RTS Times in Your Area: World Clock Converter Level and Prerequisites: This advanced course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary support staff interested in reproduction in honey bee colonies. It is recommended that participants have a basic knowledge of bees and beekeeping terminology.

In this course we will cover the reproductive aspects of the hive. We will discuss queen and drone biology, mating, and genetics. Participants will learn about queen management as well, including queen rearing, queen handling, and introduction. Week 1 (Real Time Session February 28, 2021): Queen Biology and Queen Rearing

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Describe the queen honey bee anatomy
- Explain the life-cycle of the queen
- Identify the major functions of the honey bee queen
- Define the differences between the honey bee queen and the female workers
- Recognize queen related issues in the hive
- Outline methods to deal with problem queens in the hive

Meghan Milbrath has been keeping bees for over 20 years. She runs a beekeeping business in Munith, Michigan, where she keeps over 200 colonies and breeds queen bees. Dr. Milbrath works as an academic specialist at Michigan State University where she specializes in pollinator research and extension. Her academic focus is on transmission dynamics of environmentally acquired infectious diseases. Total CE Credit: 2

- Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
