Respiratory distress is a common presenting complaint in the emergency room and often develops in the intensive care unit. It is a life-threatening and rapidly progressing syndrome that encompasses a wide range of underlying diseases. Clinicians are faced with 1- rapidly recognizing the problem; 2- promptly stabilizing the patient; and 3- initiating the appropriate workup. Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
- review basic respiratory physiology.
- present obvious and subtle signs of respiratory distress.
- outline various diagnostic measures for the patient in respiratory distress.
- discuss the range of therapeutic measures needed to stabilize those patients.
