Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists
interested in hematology topics.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians. Licensed or experienced (5 years suggested)
veterinary staff may also enroll provided they are associated with an enrolled veterinarian.
Veterinary staff need to provide the name of their veterinarian in the comment section
during the enrollment process.
This course is approved by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE 22-32820)
Course Information:
This course will cover basic concepts in collection and evaluation of blood smears,
how to properly collect and prepare a blood smear, and
the basic concepts of in-house hematology analyzers.
The course will provide a systematic approach to identifying normal and abnormal findings and
discuss how to differentiate between normal and abnormal findings that appear similar.
Emphasis will be placed on clinical significance of findings as they apply to the
overall health status of the patient.
Week 1 (Real Time Session June 12, 2018)

Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- understand appropriate specimen collection and handling techniques for blood
collections as it relates to CBCs and other hematologic testing.
- understand general principles pertaining to methodology and potential limitations
of in-house hematology analyzers.
- evaluate platelets on a blood smear, be aware of breed-related differences,
and be able to identify abnormalities.
Week 2 (Real Time Session June 19, 2018)

Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- utilize a systematic approach to the blood smear and identify normal
and abnormal findings specifically related to erythrocytes,
including common hemotrophic parasites.
Week 3 (Real Time Session June 26, 2018)
Presenters: Dr. Rebekah G. Gunn-Christie and Dr. Pamela Baker
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- utilize a systematic approach to the blood smear and identify normal
and abnormal findings specifically related to leukocytes,
including common hemotrophic parasites.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenters:
Dr. Rebekah Gunn-Christie is a board-certified clinical pathologist
with a special interest in cytology and hematology. She has been a diagnostic
pathologist with Antech Diagnostics since 2007, and is also a consultant with
Veterinary Information Network and an Assistant Adjunct Professor at North Carolina
State University. Dr. Gunn-Christie has lectured on cytology and hematology at
numerous continuing education events/conferences.
Dr. Pam Baker is a practicing small animal veterinarian and
a full-time clinical pathology professor in the Veterinary Technology program at
Seneca College in Ontario, Canada. In 2008, she completed the Graduate Diploma
program in Clinical Pathology at Ontario Veterinary College. Dr. Baker has offered
numerous lectures and wet labs at continuing education seminars and conferences in
North America. Her special area of interest is making clinical pathology approachable
and practical
