This
basic course is open to veterinarians
actively interested in veterinary dermatology.
There is no specific prerequisite experience or knowledge required for this course.

Course Information:
This course will provide an overview and update of dermatology in 2018.
Specific topics covered will include a review of atopic dermatitis
(food and environment) with case examples and practical discussions
on timely information in treatment.
There will be an overview of hot topics in feline dermatology including
recent clinical guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of dermatophytosis.
A review will be presented of diseases of hair loss, why they occur
and how to approach a case of non-pruritic alopecia.
Case examples will be included.
Finally, bacterial skin disease will be discussed to include how to
identify and diagnose superficial bacterial skin disease versus deep
bacterial skin disease. How and when to use antibiotics and what to do about
the problem of methicillin resistant staph infections.
Week 1 (Real Time Session April 4, 2018):
Allergies 2018 (What to do when Apoquel®/CytopointTM don't work) & Update on feline skin disease

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Summarize the mechanisms of action of Apoquel®
and CytopointTM and how they differ.
- Discuss why there may be failures for oclacitinib or lokivetmab.
- Discuss treatments for allergic dermatitis in small animal dermatology.
- Discuss various aspects of feline skin disease, including:
- Diagnosis and treatment of dermatophytosis.
- New feline skin diseases.
- New treatments in feline dermatology.
Week 2 (Real Time Session April 11, 2018):
Fuzzy Wuzzy, Approaches to non-pruritic alopecia, & Update on bacterial pyoderma

Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Discuss the hair cycle in animals and what diseases can cause non-pruritic alopecia.
- Discuss treatments for alopecic diseases.
- Discuss bacterial skin disease in small animals:
- Superficial vs. deep bacterial skin disease
- Judicious use of systemic antibiotics
- Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus sp. infection
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Mitchell D. Song received his veterinary degree from
Mississippi State University and completed a residency in dermatology
at the University of California, Davis. He is currently the owner of
Animal Dermatology, PC in Scottsdale and Phoenix, Arizona USA.
