Course Information:
The second of 2 modules, this course is designed to allow discussions of current techniques used in veterinary dentistry. Veterinarians practicing all levels of veterinary dentistry are invited to participate, from the veterinarian just interested in getting started in veterinary dentistry to the Board-Certified Veterinary Dentist. The course will cover how to read intraoral radiographs, normal radiographic anatomy, radiographic diagnosis of common intraoral disease, indications for exodontia, extraction equipment and extraction techniques, indications, drugs and landmarks for local anesthesia, treatment of feline tooth resorption and stomatitis.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • recognize normal radiographic anatomy.
  • understand the fundamentals of dental radiographic interpretation: periodontics, endodontics, and orthodontics.
  • describe the indications for exodontias.
  • describe the instrumentation for exodontias.
  • understand simple extraction techniques.
  • understand surgical extraction techniques.
  • understand how to perform multiple root extractions.
  • understand how to perform techniques for specific teeth.
  • recognize the indications for exodontia.
  • understand the equipment and techniques for simple and surgical extractions.
  • describe the advantages of local dental blocks.
  • describe the various local anesthesia agents.
  • describe what each nerve block does.
  • understand the techniques used.
  • describe current concepts in the treatment of tooth resorption and stomatitis in the feline.

Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians actively interested in veterinary dentistry. Participants in the course should have an interest in taking better care of the dental needs of their patients. Although not required, it is strongly recommended that participants take the first module, DENT109-0921: Veterinary Dentistry for the General Practitioner Module 1, prior to enrolling in this course.
Accreditation: This course is approved for 6 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-752975)
