Course Information:
The course is focused on the participant becoming comfortable with interpretation of intraoral dental radiographs of dogs and cats. Starting with normal radiographic anatomy and correlation to gross anatomy, a foundational knowledge base will be established. Also discussed in this section will be common radiographic errors and tools to fix these errors. Common presentations of common diseases will be discussed as well as a diagnostic algorithm for assessing less typical lesions. Periodontal, endodontic and tooth resorption related changes will be discussed in detail. The course will wrap up with the fundamentals of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) including principles for interpretation, its uses and limitations.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • discuss the different types of digital radiographic equipment available and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
  • recognize the need for making full mouth dental radiographs.
  • take or instruct their staff on how to properly make an intraoral radiograph.
  • recognize and correct radiographic errors.
  • recognize normal radiographic anatomy of the teeth, jaws, and associated structures.
  • develop a diagnostic algorithm to aid in interpretation when the pathology is easily classified.
  • recognize radiographic patterns of periodontal disease, endodontic disease, and tooth resorption and the clinical indications of these diseases.
  • avoid the common errors in intraoral radiographic diagnosis.
  • become familiar with the principles of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) acquisition and interpretation.

Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians actively interested in the interpretation of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and dental radiographs.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 6 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1168554)

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session April 10, 2024)
This session will demonstrate how to obtain full mouth dental radiographs, errors in making radiographs and the normal radiographic appearance. It will introduce general changes seen with pathology to allow for interpretation of pathology.

Week 2 (Real Time Session April 17, 2024)
The three most common dental pathologies (periodontal disease, dental injury, tooth resorption) will be discussed, showing common and uncommon presentations.

Week 3 (Real Time Session April 24, 2024)
Oral pathology beyond the common diseases will be discussed, including various odontogenic cysts and neoplasia. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) will be introduced including principles of interpretation and indications.
