These recordings will be placed in the conference library and will be available for viewing at any time. However, CE credit cannot be earned solely from watching the video replays. Attendance for some portion of each day is required for CE credit.

The VIN Behavior conference is a unique educational opportunity for all veterinary professionals to learn about behavioral problems that are common in veterinary patients. How to treat them can be a mystery. Many of these cases can be diagnosed and managed in general practice. At this conference, you will learn how to recognize common behavior problems in canine and feline patients, collect and analyze a patient’s behavioral history, diagnose, and treat behavior problems in a general practice setting.

Session 1.1 (Saturday, July 29, 2023; 8:00-8:50 am PT)
Topic: Getting Started in Behavior: Observations and Histories
This session will explore the fundamental principles related to the development of normal and abnormal behaviors in companion animals. Outline feline and canine social behaviors and their impact on communication. As well as how to gather and interpret a complete behavioral history.

Session 1.2 (Saturday, July 29, 2023; 9:00-9:50 am PT)
Topic: Is this Behavioral or Medical? Creating Your Differential List
In this hour participants will learn to create a medical and behavioral differential list for common behavior problems encountered in companion animal species. Explore the impact of pain in behavioral responses. Along with the impact of underlying medical conditions on behavioral responses in both cats and dogs.

Session 1.3 (Saturday, July 29, 2023; 10:00-10:50 am PT)
Topic: Developing a Behavioral Treatment Plan
Let’s develop a treatment and behavior modification plan including management and medications. We will explore learning theory and its application in the treatment of behavior problems, and how to form collaborative relationships with other behavioral professionals to provide support for clients and patients with behavior problems.

Topic: Behavioral Psychopharmacology
Learn about medications used in the treatment of behavior problems in dogs and cats. Outline the difference between situational and maintenance medication, and when to choose and why. As well as develop a medication treatment plan for common behaviors encountered in general practice.

Session 1.5 (Saturday, July 29, 2023; 1:00-1:50 pm PT)
Topic: Aggression in the Veterinary Hospital: Treating the Patient in Front of You
To end the first day, explore the development of fear-conditioning in dogs and cats. Learn to develop individual treatment plans for patients that are fearful and anxious at the veterinary hospital, and medication protocols for those fearful patients.

Topic: Canine Aggression
Let’s discuss the factors that affect behavior including aggression in canine patients. Develop a medical and behavioral differential list for canine aggression cases. And make a treatment plan including medications for canine aggression cases.

Session 2.2 (Sunday, July 30, 2023; 9:00-9:50 am PT)
Topic: Feline Aggression
In this session explore the factors that affect behavior including aggression in feline patients. Develop a medical and behavioral differential list for feline aggression cases. And create a successful treatment plan including medications for feline aggression cases.

Session 2.3 (Sunday, July 30, 2023; 10:00-10:50 am PT)
Topic: Fears, Phobias, and Anxiety Disorders in Dogs and Cats
Outline the difference between canine and feline fear, anxiety, and phobias. By developing a medical and behavioral differential list for fear and anxiety cases, along with creating a treatment plan including medications for these cases.

Session 2.4 (Sunday, July 30, 2023; 12:00-12:50 pm PT)
Topic: House Soiling in Cats
Outline the difference between Inappropriate Elimination (Toileting) and marking in cats. We will create a medical and behavioral differential list for house soiling in cats and discuss a treatment plan including medications for them.

Session 2.5 (Sunday, July 30, 2023; 1:00-1:50 pm PT)
Topic: Prevention and Early Intervention for Behavior
We will end the conference by outlining the fundamental principles related to the development of behaviors in companion animals and the importance of early intervention. Explore communication options with clients regarding their pet’s behavior. And discuss educational resources for clients including puppy and kitten kindergarten classes.
