Course Information:
In this course we will look at the significance of team behaviour, the perception for how people treat one another and the concept of civility in practice, together with how we might recognise moments of incivility. There will be a chance to understand some of the underlying science that demonstrates a powerful connection between the way in which people are perceived to treat each other and patient outcomes.

We will then explore the ways in which events that are perceived as uncivil can be successfully and compassionately addressed, for the sake of people and patients.

Based upon the experience of developing and running VetLed’s 'Civility Saves Lives' Campaign since 2021, following a close collaboration with the original initiative within the UK National Health Service, there will be an opportunity to recognise the specific challenges that arise from the inherently subjective nature of incivility and to benefit from lessons that have been learned about how this complex issue can be navigated within your team.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • define the concept of incivility and learn how to recognize it based upon the perception of the recipient.
  • develop an awareness of factors that could affect the impact of your own behaviors on people in your team.
  • understand the evidence that links the perception of team behavior with patient outcomes.
  • understand how to effectively respond to moments of perceived incivility, both directly and indirectly.
  • understand the systems and tools that can be implemented within practices to address incivility, primarily at a peer-to-peer level.
