Level and Prerequisites:
This
intermediate course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary staff
actively interested in small animal behavior. This course has been specifically tailored for
the small animal practitioner and veterinary technician/technologist. Participants are required
to have a basic knowledge of anatomy, neurology, physiology, animal behavior and welfare.
This course includes practical approaches to various pet anxiety issues.

Course Information:
This course is designed to allow discussions in the
different areas of pet anxieties, fears and phobias. It will include
some strategies to help you diagnose and treat your patients' anxiety
disorders and support their owners as effectively as possible.
No two behavior cases are the same. However, a review of the
pathogenesis of these disorders, the general principles that
apply for them, together with case studies, will give you more
confidence in managing these cases in your practice.
There will also be an overview of the role of medication and
environmental management in anxiety disorders. Veterinarians
practicing at all levels of the veterinary field are invited to participate.
Week 1 (Real Time Session August 1, 2018):
Fears, Phobias and Anxieties
Presenters: Dr. Debbie J. Calnon and Dr. Kersti Seksel
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- understand the differences between fear, phobia, and anxiety.
- understand physiological and associated behavioral manifestations.
- help clients recognize the condition.
- identify possible misunderstandings (with reference to and some
of the other misinterpretations e.g., what spraying might mean
to the owner etc) and the impact on learning and behavior modification.
Week 2 (Real Time Session August 8, 2018):
Dogs and Anxiety Canine Aggression
Presenters: Dr. Debbie J. Calnon and Dr. Kersti Seksel
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- identify canine aggression and anxiety- are they always linked?
- understand terminology affect approach and understanding?
- understand managing aggressive incidents.
- discuss behavior modification: what does it mean? strategies to manage anxiety.
- identify behavior at the veterinary clinic.
- discuss factors affecting prognosis.
- understand is euthanasia admitting failure?
Week 3 (Real Time Session August 15, 2018):
Cats and Anxiety

Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- discuss are cats different from dogs with regards to anxiety?
- discuss urine spraying, urination out of the tray, aggression and cats.
- identify obsessive compulsive disorders.
- understand behavior at the veterinary clinic.
- understand behavior modification - environmental management and medication.
Week 4 (Real Time Session August 22, 2018):
Noise Phobias and Separation Anxiety
Presenters: Dr. Debbie J. Calnon and Dr. Kersti Seksel
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- identify presenting signs.
- understand crates, why you might need them in the treatment program and how not to misuse them.
- discuss behavior modification strategies.
- understand medication what to use and when to use it.
- understand overview of the role of medication and environmental management of anxiety disorders.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenters:
Debbie Calnon currently divides her time between seeing referral
cases to her Behaviour Counseling Service and teaching behaviour topics to veterinarians,
veterinary nurses, trainers and other groups interested in small animal behaviour.
She is Past President of the Australian Veterinary Behaviour Interest Group and
is passionate about promoting the importance of behavioural medicine to the veterinary
profession. Debbie enjoys sharing ideas and experiences on VIN and appreciates the
benefits of being part of the supportive VIN community.
Kersti Seksel is a registered veterinary specialist in behavioural
medicine and is board certified in the Australian, American and European Colleges.
She works in two specialist referral practices as well as her own practice seeing
behaviour cases in both Sydney and Melbourne in Australia. She is Associate Senior
lecturer at Charles Stuart University and teaches the Distance Education course in
Behavioural Medicine for the Centre of Veterinary Education at the University of Sydney,
presents education courses all over the world in behavioural medicine, and writes
for scientific journals, textbooks, as well as popular magazines. She is a regular
presenter in the media and currently is the President of the Australian Companion
Animal Council and loves being part of the wider VIN community.
