Course Information:
Do you have canine patients that need fast, effective sedation? Does Dexdomitor and its associated bradycardia make you uncomfortable? Are you interested in staying up to date on new FDA-approved drugs on the market? If you answered yes to any of these questions, this course is for you! Zenalpha (medetomidine and vatinoxan) is a newer sedative drug on the market. This course goes beyond the drug’s package insert to provide a thorough understanding of the pharmacology of alpha-2 adrenergic agonists and vatinoxan. This course will also provide case examples of when Zenalpha is indicated and when it is not. Side effects and contraindications to its use will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • understand alpha-2 adrenergic agonist pharmacology.
  • understand Zenalpha’s pharmacology and how it compares to other alpha-2 adrenergic agonists available.
  • understand vatinoxan pharmacology and be familiar with the research behind this agent.
  • select cases for which Zenalpha is appropriate.
  • understand when Zenalpha use is not appropriate.
  • understand uses of Zenalpha that are considered “off-label” use of the product.
  • know the potential side effects of and contraindications to Zenalpha use.

Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians who are considering adding a newer drug to facilitate procedural sedation in dogs in their practice.
Credit Approval: This course is approved for 2 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-1193522)
