COURSE DESCRIPTION: Fundamentals of Avian Medicine
This course is designed to present a balanced introduction and foundation in avian medical practice. Designed primarily for general practitioners, this course will also have great value for veterinary students and animal health technicians. The course will cover the key aspects of avian practice: from sources of information, through equipmentation, disease syndromes, diagnostics, therapeutics and surgery.
COURSE OUTLINE:
Week 1:
Information Resources, Equipmentation, Supplies and Nutrition
To get us started on the right foot, a review of informational resources, approaches to staying current, and a sound discussion of nutrition should help. Although emphasizing primarily those species most common in companion animal practice, other species in addition to the passerine and psittacine birds will be included where pertinent.
Week 2:
Anatomy, Physiology, and the Physical Examination
A thorough discussion of how birds are built, how they work, and direct comparisons with the mammals that most of us are more familiar with, this week will help you understand the nuances of the avian species group as a whole. The techniques of how to restrain, physically examine and evaluate your patient (with no harm occurring to either of you) will be reviewed, discussed and emphasized.
Week 3:
Diagnostics, Radiology
In week three, we will be pursuing the diagnosis of disease in avian species, selecting, performing and interpreting laboratory diagnostics, as well as radiographic imaging. Lots of material to cover here - so, hold onto your hats!
Week 4:
Diseases and Disease Syndromes
In week four, we will review the common diseases and disease syndromes of bird species. When combined with physical examination and diagnostic options, you will now begin to feel a bit more familiar with how to approach your patient and its problem clinically.
Week 5:
Therapeutics, Clinical Procedures, Necropsy
Once the diagnosis is narrowed down, it is time to treat your patient. In week 5, treatment options and clinical procedures will be covered. And - for those patients who do not survive - the importance of necropsy and techniques of avian necropsy will be addressed.
Week 6:
Anesthesia and Surgery
In the final week of your course, anesthesia and surgery will be covered. A broad and key topic, this material will help you become familiar with some of the common anesthetic issues and options available to you, and some of the more common surgical procedures that are performed on birds.
