Effects of Cyproterone Acetate on Testes in Dog

Objective

Cyproterone acetate (CPA) is an antiandrogen might be used on treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia in dog. Administration of CPA can induce side effects on other tissues like testes.

Materials & Methods

Four dogs with 25 Kg body weight were selected. Dogs were received CPA (androcur) 2 mg/Kg SID orally for 60 days. Thus they were castrated and were evaluated histopathologically.

Results

Pathologic changes of testes in all samples include degeneration of seminiferous tubules and severe decrease in spermatogenesis. All dogs showed increase in appetite and body weight.

Conclusion

Degeneration of seminiferous tubules is probably due to effect of CPA on testosterone metabolism, so that concentration of dihydrotestosterone were decreased in testes tissue. Dihydrotestosterone is responsible for spermatogenesis. Administration of CPA 10-20 mg SID in men has not been caused significant side effects, but with 100 mg has been caused decrease in libido, gynecomastia, lethargy and increase in body weight.
