Objectives

The purpose of this study was to evaluate normal size of kidneys on the plain radiographs in toy breed dogs.

Materials and Methods

Sixty dogs aging 1-13 yrs without sex discrimination were examined. After taking of VD-abdomen radiographs, normal size of kidneys was measured on the plain radiographs with calipers. These included the length of L2 (the second lumbar vertebra), length and width of the left and right kidneys.

Results

On plain radiographs, the detection rates of the left, right and both kidneys length were 75.0, 23.3 and 11.7%, respectively, whereas the detection rates of the left, right and both kidneys width were 35.0, 28.3 and 5.0%, respectively.

The ratios of the left, right kidney and both kidney length to L2 vertebra length were 2.68±0.30, 2.71±0.32 and 2.72±0.31, respectively, whereas the ratios of the left, right kidney and both kidney width to L2 vertebra length were 1.72±0.23, 1.71±0.23 and 1.71±0.23, respectively.

Conclusion

These findings revealed that the ratios of kidney length and width to L2 vertebra length in toy breed dogs were lower than those of normal dogs that were known generally.
