Determination of Rabies Vaccination Immunity in Various Ages Group of Household Dogs in Tehran

Rabies is one of the oldest known viral diseases. This disease is a very dangerous zoonoses which causes infection in the central nervous system. The agent of this is a neurotropic virus of Rhabdoviridae family which is usually communicated following the bite of contaminated animals through the saliva and can be prevented only by creating prompt immunity immediately after contamination and prior to the emergence of symptoms.

In order to achieve the correct intervals of rabies vaccination to increase the range of assurance of assurance from the existence of antibody titre in the dog's serum in the intervals of prevalent vaccination plans, a study was carried out. For this purpose, three age groups of under four months to five years and above five years old dogs were selected from the apparently dogs referred for initial vaccination to polyclinic of faculty of veterinary medicine. The dogs under study were sampled (totally 155 samples) and blood and serum was taken from on the same day of referral, also 1,3,6,9, and 12 months after the vaccination with cerebral vaccine of Pasteur Institute. The rate of antibody in these serums was measured in Pasteur Institute by the use of RFFIT method. The results showed that the vaccine prepared on the mouse brain causes weak immunity titre maximum for six months. By the comparison carried out between age groups of under 4 months old, four months five years old, it was specified that the most immunity response has been created in the three-month age and the least response in the animals above five years old. It was also observed that in case the booster vaccine is not injected after the initial injection, it is required to inject the second vaccine at least in the 6th month of age to preserve the immunity in optimal level. The other notable point is that in countries such as Iran where rabies is endemic and the there rabies is endemic and there is lot danger for human beings, it is better to conduct the initial vaccination on a multi- dorsal and then inject annual boosters. At the end, it should be mentioned that due to the importance of disease specially in pups which are more probable of biting it is better to conduct vaccination in the 2nd month of age, the same as the other viral vaccines.

In order to determine the precise time of this injection, also determine the time needed for injection of booster vaccine and get informed of the immunity from new vaccines of cellular of Pasteur Institute, further studies are needed to be carried out in this same field.
