Build a Deck of Flash Cards From the Available Card Set(s)

Flash cards are grouped into sets according to topic. One or more of these card sets are combined by the user to create a deck of flash cards.

The examples provided for this document come from flash card sets that were created for the VSPN TECH120: VTNE Preparation course and the VIN MULT201: Organ System & ABVP Core Review Module A course. Note the VIN logo and the course title on the window title bar in the example below. If this were a VSPN course such as TECH120: VTNE Preparation, the title bar would contain the VSPN logo and the title would be "VTNE Preparation ."

The flash card main page will list the set(s) of cards for the topic or course listed on the window title bar. Each set of flash cards in the list will have:
  • a checkbox - to select/deselect the flash card set,
  • a title - to indicate the topic of the flash card set,
  • (N) - where 'N' is the number of cards in the flash card set.

Step 1: Select one or more card sets to review.
The selected card sets will be combined to create a deck of cards. To select/deselect one or more card set(s):
  • Click on a checkbox to set it.
  • Clear a selected checkbox by clicking it a second time.
  • The SELECT ALL button will set the checkboxes for all the flash card sets listed.
  • The CLEAR ALL button will clear the checkboxes for all the flash card sets listed.
In the example below, the flash card sets entitled "Dentistry" and "Diagnostic Imaging" have been selected. The "Dentistry" card set has nine (9) flash cards and the "Diagnostic Imaging" card set has twelve (12).

htflashcards02.jpg
Step 2: View cards by question or by answer?
If you select the radio button (round circle) for Question, the flash cards will initialize with the question displayed.

If you select the radio button (round circle) for Answer, the flash cards will initialize with the answer displayed.

The default is to view the cards by question.

What's in a Flash Card?

Each flash card has a question panel, an answer panel, and a panel of buttons on the left side of the window.

The title of the card set for the current flash card is displayed at the bottom left in the answer panel. In the following example, the card set title is "Dentistry."

The control for flipping the card over is located at the bottom right of the answer panel.

Each card will initialize with either the question or answer visible based upon your choice in Step 2 of the deck setup. In the example below the deck was setup to View By Question, so the flash card initialized with the question displayed.

htflashcards05.jpg
If you had setup the deck to View By Answer then each flash card will initialize with only the answer displayed.

View By Question/Answer

In Step 2 of the deck setup you specified whether the flash cards would initialize with the answer displayed (View By Answer) or with the question displayed (View By Question). The first button on the left, indicated by a purple box in the next two examples, can be used to switch back and forth between View By Answer and View By Question.

In View By Question mode each flash card will initialize with a question in the question panel, the answer panel will be blank, and the first button on the left will display "View by Answer." See the example below.

 htflashcards07.jpg
Selecting the View by Answer button will change the deck setup so the flash cards start with the answer displayed.

In View By Answer mode each flash card will initialize with a blank question panel, the answer panel will contain the answer to the flash card question, and the first button on the left will display "View by Question." See the example below.

Using the Flash Cards

Now that you have built a deck of flash cards, let's talk about how to use them.

View by Question Mode
To see the answer to a flash card question, you can click on Flip Card or hit the space bar on your PC keyboard. In addition, if the question contains a list of answers (a, b, c, etc.), clicking on one of the answer selections (a, b, c, etc.) provided within the question panel will cause the flash card answer to display.
View by Answer Mode
With View By Answer mode, each flash card will initialize with only the answer displayed. Once you think you know the question that matches the displayed answer, click on Flip Card or hit the space bar on your PC keyboard. The matching question will be displayed in the question panel.

View Card Filter

When you flip a card or select an answer, you are provided with the opportunity to flag whether you answered the card correctly by selecting either Right or Wrong in the bottom right of the button panel.
 htflashcards09.jpg
The Right and Wrong flags are only available while the current deck is open. When you close the flash card window or create a new deck, the Right and Wrong flags will be cleared. These flags are used so you can limit the cards you are viewing to a subset of the current deck. Just select one of the following filter options from the View Cards drop-list menu:
  • All - displays all the cards in the current deck regardless of flag settings.
  • I got right - displays only the cards you flagged as answered Right.
  • I got wrong - displays only the cards you flagged as answered Wrong.
  • I've done - displays only the cards that you marked as Right or Wrong.
  • I haven't done - displays only the cards that you did not mark.
In the following example, only the cards that were answered (flagged as Right or Wrong) will be displayed. So that from the original deck of 21 cards, only 13 are available with this View Cards option.

Navigating the Deck Using Next and Previous

The Next and Previous buttons are located at the bottom of the flash card window.
htflashcards11.jpg
Selecting the Next button or hitting the Enter key on your keyboard will initialize and display the next flash card in the deck.

You do not have to complete a flash card to navigate away from it.

The flash card deck wraps from last card to first. When the last card in the deck is displayed, selecting Next will take you to the first card in the deck.

Likewise, when you are on the first card in the deck, selecting the Previous button will take you to the last card in the deck.
