Radiologic Evaluation of Immediate Versus Delayed Implantation in Dogs

Osseointegration is based on the idea of a stable bone anchorage of a dental implant in contrast to a soft-tissue anchorage. Full osseointegration is necessary to achieve long-term success of dental implant. And nowadays, computer-assisted examination has also proved effective in dental implantology. This investigation aimed to find out the relative merit of osseointegration in immediate and delayed insertion of implant using dental computed tomography (CT) and bone scintigraph in the mandible of dogs.

Materials & Methods

Three mongrel dogs with a mean weight of 9 kg were prepared for this investigation. Implant system with 4 mm diameter and 10 mm length was chosen for insertion. Left mandibular 2nd and 3rd premolar was extracted for the delayed implant insertion; After 12 weeks, right mandibular 2nd and 3rd premolar were extracted for the immediate implant insertion. And implant was inserted.


Before and after insertion, and after 4,8, and 12 weeks, Dental CT and scintigraphy were obtained. Throughout the period of study, BMD of peri-implant bone increased and 4 weeks after surgery, there were no significant differences between BMD of normal alveolar bone and peri-implant bone. And there were minimal differences of BMD between immediate and delayed implantation through the period.


Under the CT and scintigraphic images, it is convinced that reconstruction of bone surrounding immediate implant can be as successful as reconstruction of bone surrounding delayed implant.
