Preoperative Planning By Computerized Tomography and Radiographs for Treatment of Fractures with Ilizarov Method in Dogs

The purpose of this study was to use preoperative planning by computerized tomography and radiographs for treatment of fractures with Ilizarov Method in dogs, and also to present the results of these operations to our colleagues.

Materials & Methods

This study was performed on 3 dogs in Szent Istvan University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Surgery. Treatment of these cases was provided by application of Ilizarov apparatus. Radiographs of intact and broken extremities and computerized tomographies (CT) of related intact bone were taken. From these graphs, location of the fracture, number of fragments, location, direction and number of fissures, length of extremity, safe pin track levels were determined in detail.


The cases used their extremities on postoperative 2nd, 6th and 1st case respectively, and the weight bearing on the related extremities started on the postoperative 17th, 22nd and 20th days, respectively. It was observed that the radiological consolidation was completed on postoperative 63rd, 30th and 35th days respectively, and the apparatus was removed on postoperative 75th, 35th and 38th days respectively.


Preoperative planning is most and easiest way to adapt the surgeon to the operation and the case, to increase the success of the operation, to facilitate healing period to reduce the complication rate.


In this study, the CT of intact extremities, radiographs of fractured extremities, clinical data and anatomical atlas were evaluated together, preoperative preparations were much more successful and positive results were obtained.
