Fixation of Radius-Ulna Fracture Used by Circular External Skeletal Fixator in 12 Cats

Introduction

Ilizarov apparatus is a superb circular external skeletal fixation systems, used in many fields of different orthopaedic conditions. Ilizarov method and circular external skeletal fixator are highly used in veterinary orthopaedics. It is not only used in fracture fixation, but also bone lengthening, nonunion, correcting angular deformity, arthrodesis and bone transport. The aim of this study is indicated circular external skeletal fixation (CESF) system, designed by our team, for treatment of radius-ulna fractures in cats and shares all outcomes with our colleagues.

Objectives

This study was realized on different ages, breeds, sexes and weights of 12 cats with radius-ulna fractures.

Methods

The CESF system for cats is formed in 2 different types (full rings and 5/8 rings), 35 mm diameters of rings and connection rods on 4 mm diameters, in addition to 1.0 mm, 1.2 mm and 1.5 mm diameters K-wires and 7 number nut-key for wire fixation bolts and nuts. Limited open approach was performed in all cases.

Results

The first usage of affected limb was observed on postoperative 1st–3rd day for all cases. While the radiological consolidation was shown in postoperative 25th–38th days, the apparatus was removed in postoperative 35th–50th days. According to the clinical and cosmetical outcomes, 7 cases were evaluated “excellent”, 4 cases “good”, excepted for pin tract infection, and “poor” owing to pin breakage in a case.

Conclusions

As a conclusion, CESF system and its apparatus, designed by us, is determined reliable using for treatment of radius-ulna fractures in cats and is well tolerated by cats.
