In spite of its growing importance as a guard dog due to increasing insecurity, as well as its adaptation and relative resistance to many diseases, very little attention has been paid to the reproductive physiology of the Nigerian local bitch, in comparison to exotic breeds; hence its reproductive potential has not been fully elucidated. This study was therefore embarked upon to provide some reliable information on the age at puberty of Nigerian local bitches in order to contribute to the body of knowledge in this area. Thirty-two female pre-pubertal dogs, aged between three and five months were purchased from local dog sellers within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. They were housed in individual cages, fed once daily and monitored until the onset of puberty, characterised by tumescence of the vulva, pro-estral bleeding, enlargement of the mammary glands and vaginal cytology. Results showed that all the bitches manifested pro-estral bleeding between 8 1/2 months and 13 1/2 months of age. Bleeding was preceded by restlessness (72%), an alert stance (45%), gazing at the flank (62%) and frequent licking of the vulva (90%). Breeders and prospective pet keepers are therefore advised to note these signs which characterize the onset of adolescence (and hence sexual activity) in female dogs with a view to making adequate preparations for the bloody vulva discharges which occur during this period.
