A Retrospective Study of Biopsies in Small Animals in Caracas, Venezuela

The aim of this study was to describe a retrospective study of biopsies in small animals in Caracas, Venezuela. A retrospective study of cases diagnosed through biopsies in the Diagnostic Services Private Pathology in Caracas, Venezuela, during the years 2008–2015 was conducted. Tissue samples from biopsies were referred to five major veterinary clinics and veterinarians in private practice in the city of Caracas, Venezuela. Samples received in 10% formalin were processed by conventional histological methods and subsequently stained with hematoxylin-eosin and observed in the light microscope for histopathological diagnosis, and finally a descriptive statistical analysis was performed. Biopsies analyzed were a total of 2930. The 68% of tumors had malignant histological features characterized by marked anaplasia, hyperchromatic nucleus, loss of nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio, typical and atypical mitoses approximately more than 3 per field (40x), and of these 32% showed a benign histological pattern. Neoplasm by affected system described below: integumentary system 21% mainly breeds Boxer, Pit-Bull, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Yorkshire, medium and large mixed races, mammary gland 35% in Poodle, Cocker Spaniel, Boxer, Golden Retriever and German Shepherd, lymphoid tissue 11% mainly in the Poodle race, Boxer, Pit-Bull and large mixed races, connective tissue 22% in races Rottweiler, large mixed races, German Shepherd and Weimaraner, digestive system 8%, bone tissue 1% in races Rottweiler, large mixed races, German Shepherd and reproductive Weimaraner and 2% in Poodle, Cocker Spaniel, Boxer, Golden Retriever and German Shepherd breeds. In relation to age in this study was presented between 7–12 years on average.
