Introduction

Annually, more than 600 neurological cases were referred to the Neurology Center, Kasetsart University with different neurological problems. Internationally, common brain and spinal cord disorders have been published. However, not only the incidence of neurological disorders in Thailand has never been reported, but the highest neurological prevalence also.

Objectives

To report the incidence of neurological disorders specialized in brain and spinal cord of companion animals in Bangkok during 2012-2013.

Methods

Medical records from 1,370 new cases of dogs and cats that referred to the Neurology Center during 2012–2013 were collected. All data were retrospectively categorized by lesion and year. Then, data were analyzed with Microsoft office Excel® 2011. The occurrence of each lesions were shown as percentage.

Results

We found that the highest prevalence of brain disorder was epilepsy. The percentage of epilepsy incidence in 2012 and 2013 was 60% and 70%, respectively. The second incidence was hydrocephalus that was 22% in 2012 and 14% in 2013. For the spinal cord diseases, the highest prevalence was intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). The percentage of IVDD incidence in 2012 and 2013 was 66.7% and 63%, respectively. Followed with vertebral fracture that was 14% and 9%.

Conclusion

This is the first record of the neurological diseases incidence in Bangkok, Thailand. In the past 2 years, the most common neurological disorders in brain and spinal cord of dogs and cats at Kasetsart University Veterinary Teaching Hospital were epilepsy and IVDD. This summary could be referable information for neurologists and general practitioners.
