Abstract

A juvenile Port Jackson shark (Heterodontus portusjacksoni) was presented for a suspected gut prolapse. Following sedation and examination, herniation of the spiral colon through the right abdominal pore was detected. The hernia was reduced and the abdominal pore size decreased with sutures. The shark made an uneventful recovery from surgery and 6 months later is normal and shown no sign of relapse. The role and function of the abdominal pore will be discussed.
