Developmental Studies for the Treatment of Monogenetic Trematodes of Fish

The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of flubendazole in the control of Gyrodactylus sp. on Goldfish Carassius auratus. The treatment regime consisted of a 1 mg/ liter (PPM) dip for one hour. The control consisted of a dip in the carrier-solvent. Fish were dipped in 10 gallon (38 liter) glass aquaria equipped with bubbling stones. Following treatment the fish were removed to 5 gallon (16 liter) aquaria, and examined for flukes at 4, 8, 24, 36, 72, and 96 hours. The results indicated that exposure to the drug at 1 ppm was effective in removing Gyrodactylus sp. from Goldfish, 24 hours post treatment. The treatment did not appear to be toxic for 13 different types of ornamental tropical fish exposed to the same dosage. However, the dosage did appear to be toxic for Channel Catfish, Ictalurus punctatus. No anti-protozoan activity of the drug was noted.
