Intracranial Pressure in Dogs Anesthetized with Etomidate Infusion

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of etomidate intravenous infusion on intracranial pressure and cardiac parameters in dogs. Tem healthy adults dogs, male and females ones, whose weight ranged from 4.8 to 11.7 kg were used. General anesthesia was induced using intravenously etomidate at a dose of 5 mg/kg. The animal received oxygen at 100% by endotracheal tube in an anesthetic circuit for mechanical ventilation with rate and amplitude to maintain the end tidal carbon dioxide in 35 mmHg. After the induction the animals received intravenous infusion of etomidate in a rate of 0.5 mg/kg/min during 10 minutes. This rate was reduced to 0.2 mg/kg/min and maintained until the end of the experiment. Intracranial pressure (ICP), cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), intracranial temperature (ICT), heart rate (HR), and systolic (SAP), diastolic (DAP) and mean (MAP) arterial pressure were measured. The measurements were taken 30 minutes after the positioning of the intracranial catheter (M1). Serial measurements were carried out at 20 minutes intervals after M1 up to 60 minutes (M2, M3 and M4). Data were evaluated by analysis of variance for repeated measures (ANOVA), followed by Tukey test (p<0.05). TIC decreased during the experiment probably by the effects of anesthesia in the metabolism. Etomidate infusion did not promote alterations in the other variables. It was possible to conclude that etomidate intravenous infusion maintain stable the intracranial variables, HR and arterial pressures in dogs.
