Ultrasonographic Detection of Bitch's Ovaries that were in Different Phases of Cycles and Comparison Between Ultrasonographic Measurement (In-Vivo) and Compas Measurement (In-Vitro) Taken After Ovariohysterectomieoge

The purpose of the study was to compare ultrasonographic measurement of in-vivo ovaries with in-vitro measurement of ovaries which were taken with a compas, at different cycle phase of bitches. Therefore to evaluate the usage of ultrasonography (USG) during examination of ovarium.

The bitches in different ages and cycles (n=40) were used in this study which were attended the clinics of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Veterinary Faculty of Ankara University. Phases of oestrus were determined by using vaginal cytological method and ovaries were monitored by a linear prob. Location, size and shape of ovaries were monitored and echodensity was evaluated. Following the surgery extirpated ovaries were measured with the compas as in-vitro without bursa ovarica. Then these data were compared with USG findings.

According to cytologic data 3 bitch were in proestrus, 2 bitch were in estrusi 11 bitch were in diestrus and 4 bitch were in anestrus. Ovaries of 20 bitches (40 ovaries) were examined by USG. Right ovaries % 95 (20/19) and left ovaries % 85 (20/17) were be able to visualised. There was a difficulty to identify the ovaries without functional follicular structures (n=7, right; n=6 left). These ovaries were uniform, oval shaped and had an echogenicity that was equal to or slightly greater than that of the renal cortex. We did not have any problem in identifying accurately ovaries that had follicular structures. The average in-vivo and in-vitro length of right ovaries (n=19) was 1.84±0.009 cm and 1.68±0.008 cm (P<0.05) respectively. The average in-vivo and in-vitro width of right ovaries (n=19) was 1.23±0.007 cm and 1.05±0.005 cm (P<0.05) respectively. Statistically there was difference between in-vivo and in-vitro measurement of the right ovaries. The average in-vivo and in-vitro length of left ovaries (n=17) was 1.76±0.009 cm and 1.76±0.007 cm (P>0.05) respectively. The average in-vivo and in-vitro width of left ovaries was 1.16±0.005 cm and 1.12±0.005 cm (P>0.05) respectively.

We concluded that USG is a reliable method for ovarium examination when compare to the results of in-vivo and in-vitro measurement.
