Mountain Gorillas of Central Africa and Other Morris Animal Foundation Programs
2002 SAVMA Symposium
Robert Hilsenroth, DVM
Executive Director, Morris Animal Foundation

One of man’s closest cousins, the highly endangered mountain gorilla, is on the brink of extinction. There are only 650 of these magnificent animals alive in the world, and none exist in zoos or wild animal parks. Since 1986, Morris Animal Foundation has operated its Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project (MGVP) in Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This unique conservation initiative is the only one of its kind in the world, focused primarily on the medical aspects of an endangered species, and expanding into zoonotic human-borne diseases that threaten the very existence of these sole survivors. You will learn all about the MGVP, and see rare footage of mountain gorilla visits. In addition, you’ll discover programs for dogs, cats, horses, llama/alpacas and wildlife resulting in the advancement of veterinary medicine made possible by Morris Animal Foundation.
