Reconstruction of defects created by tumor excision can be a frustrating aspect of oncologic surgery. Fear of the inability to close a defect can also lead to undertreatment of some tumor types with further frustration and disappointment in loss of tumor control. This lecture will present logical and practical applications of basic and more advanced reconstructive procedures to allow appropriate treatment of tumor diseases with a desirable outcome. Many of the techniques described can also be applied to wound management for non-tumor disease. The lecture will be followed by an elective laboratory where participants can attempt some of the practical reconstructive techniques on canine cadavers.
