Most of the systemic mycotic infections in captive marine mammals represent the secondary stage of the disease; thus it is important to focus our attention on predisposing factors which cause suppression of the immune system. Included in this discussion are systemic candidiasis, cryptococcosis, phycomycosis, histoplasmosis, sporotrichosis, aspergillosis, coccidioidomycosis, and blastomycosis.
