OBJECTIVES

The general objective is determine the presence of Gastric Spiral Organism (GSO) in the gastric mucous of dogs whose owners were positive to the rapid urease test, in a period inferior to one year to Chilean city (Chile). The specific objectives are determine the time of positive at urease test (HE-PY test, Bios-Chile S.A.) observed in the fundus gastric biopsies of canine; to evaluate the relationship among the presence of GSO in canine and the contact degree with their owners (very near, near and moderate) and to evaluate the relationship among the presence of GSO in canine and the social and the economic level of the owners (very high, high, moderate and low).

MATERIALS

The sample in study was 31 healthy dogs whose respective owners went positive to the urease test. It also determines the contact degree between the owners and their pets, as well as the socio -economic level of the owners. The dogs were subjected to gastroscopy, obtaining a biopsy sample of the fundus, to subject urease test. The reaction urease test time used were: higher than 24 hours negative; 4 at 24 hours is considered as soft load; 2 at 4 hours is a moderate load; and smaller than 2 hours is a bacterial load considered as marked. These parameters were evaluated with antecedents of de owners.

RESULTS

97% biopsies reaction to urease test. The time more frequent (44%) is the range between 0 and 2 hours in the sector in study. 85% of the samples reacted before 4 hours to the urease test, what its indicates a high bacterial loads. 45% of the canines that possess a degree of very near classified contact (the dogs live with their owners inside their houses, the master is allowed to lick face and hands for the canine) they present positive reaction to the urease test in smaller than 4 hours. Those that present a near and moderate degree of contact correspond to 18% of canine that they have positive reaction to the urease test in time smaller than 4 hours. The very high, moderate and low socio-cultural groups they give an agreement of 100% between owners and positive pets to the presence of GSO. The high group that is constituted in a group socio-cultural intermission, presents a relationship of 89%.

CONCLUSION

The results obtained in this study allow us to conclude that:

To more bacterial load present in the canine gastric mucous, minor is the times of reaction to the urease test.

The biggest concentration in Gastric Spiral Organism is in canine whose owners have degree contact classified as very near with their respective pets.

A homogeneous distribution exists of canine positive to the urease test in the all socio-economic groups in this study.
