Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the Six-Veera Items in the diagnosis of rabies in live dogs. The test hypothesis was that the Six-Veera (as per Veera Tepsumethanon), using the clinical signs and history of the dogs can diagnose rabies in live dogs.

Materials and Methods: The data was collected in a retrospective and prospective study at the rabies diagnostic unit, Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute, The Thai Red Cross Society. We analyzed the Six-Veera Items for the reports of 1,170 dogs that came to be quarantined for 10 days between 1988-1996 and the prospective study of 308 suspected live dogs between 1997-2000.

Results: Six-Veera Items show 90.22% sensitivity, 96.16% specificity and 94.72% accuracy.

Conclusion: We concluded that Six-Veera Items could be used for preliminary rabies diagnosis in live dogs.
