How to Establish a Blood Bank
Your own blood bank ensures that your patients will always have the blood, plasma, and platelets they need. Wondering where to begin?

VIN consultant Dr. Sally Lester has created a Blood Banking Manual with videos by Dr. Joe Musielak to help you answer this question. Thanks Sally and Joe!

Find the Blood Banking Manual in the Books section of the VIN Library and in the Hematology & Emergency Medicine Specialty Centers.

What are the VIN Medical FAQ's?
The fastest route to an answer to your question is a VIN Database Search. But, because some topics have been discussed many times on the message boards, sorting through the results can be overwhelming.

To help you, the VIN consultants (and other experts) create up-to-date summaries (FAQs) of topics commonly discussed on the message boards.

Each article discusses the key ideas of the issue and gives you links to more detailed information. Additional articles are being added and updated constantly.

Save time and check out the Medical FAQs before you post.

Informed consent: what does it mean and how is it achieved?
In veterinary practice, it is vital that the client understands the range of treatment options, estimated costs, and the significance and risks of any procedure that a veterinary surgeon may carry out. But what does informed consent actually mean, and how is this achieved in day-to-day practice?

Tritrichomonas foetus infection in cats with diarrhea from densely housed origins
T. foetus was detected in a total of 38.7% (36/93) of the cats with chronic diarrhea

Ventricular arrhythmias in Rhodesian Ridgebacks with a family history of sudden death and results of a pedigree analysis for potential inheritance patterns
Holter monitoring of Rhodesian Ridgebacks with a family history of an arrhythmia or sudden death is recommended for early diagnosis of disease. An autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance in the studied dogs was likely, and inbreeding should be strongly discouraged.

Are The Ureters Visible On This Cat's Plain Radiograph?
They can mimic the ureters and are not extremely common to see, so they are not a well known "fake out".

Overweight Amazon Parrot With Possible Lameness; Weight Loss Tips For Parrot
I like to get birds flapping daily for exercise and I put them on a weight loss program.

Communicating With Clients Who Refuse Euthanasia Although The Pet Is Suffering And Dying
There is a big difference between providing palliative care to patients that are dying with the owner's understanding that a peaceful death is the goal and trying to work with owners that want to continue "curative" treatments when there truly is no cure for death.

Is There Perihilar Disease Present On This Dog's Radiograph?
If we're seeing edema in the perihilar area, I'd want to see either a more diffuse change (if non-cardiogenic) or cardiac changes consistent with left heart failure (big left atrium, loud murmur on exam, vasculature distention).
