Development of a new laparoscopic Foramen Epiploicum Mesh Closure (FEMC) technique in 6 horses
The 6 foramen epiploicum mesh closure procedures were performed successfully in a median surgery time of 22 minutes (range 18-27 minutes). On repeat laparoscopy at 4 weeks, all 6 epiploic foramens were closed and no undesired adhesions were identified.

Dog's Thoracic Radiographs Show A Mass Within The Accessory Lung Lobe
When I can't see the caudal vena cava (CVC) on the laterals, that brings concern that there's something wrong with the accessory lung lobe. Because the CVC runs along the accessory lung lobe, when there is fluid or soft tissue in the accessory, it does not provide the normal air contrast that allows us to see the CVC, so then the CVC disappears.

Turtle Receives Prosthetic For Mobility After Hindlimb Amputation
The concept for the prosthetic device was to build a sort of cart with two wheels that could be comfortably mounted onto the turtle's shell using magnets.

Kitten With Episodic Neurological Signs Has An Extrahepatic Portacaval Shunt
At least now you have a diagnosis to chase after. I have never diagnosed a portosystemic shunt in a cat, and I continue to find this cat's pattern of 'exhaustion' interesting -- a few good days followed by several bad ones. Let us know what happens. I will be watching for updates as I learn alongside you.

Is it okay to say "no"?
BRAVO!!
I would be having second thoughts as well, but I am really trying to make the same changes. The guilt is ridiculous and if someone could make a pill for that, veterinarians would make them rich!! Focus on the clients in front of you, make an extra effort for REALLY GOOD APPRECIATIVE clients, but draw the line and hold yourself to it. I have had to make my staff say no without asking me because I will give in!

Presenter(s): Rose Ann Fiskett, MS, VMD, DABVP (ECM)

This presentation will explore the reasons for starting an exotic pet practice or adding an exotic component to an existing practice. Whether or not one pursues this journey to completion depends on some soul searching and critical background preparation. There are drugs and various types of equipment unique to exotic pet practice in addition to essential whole hospital staff training. Only after careful preparation, whole hospital commitment to excellence in exotic pet care, staff training and compensation, equipment and drug purchases, etc. should the practice open the door to patients.
