The effects of plastic spectacles on the condition and behaviour of pheasants
Although spectacles halved feather damage in females, and at least halved incidences of skin damage in both sexes, they increased bill and nostril damage in females while causing no detectable damage in males. Egg collections and mortality rates did not differ between spectacled and non-spectacled pens.

Clinical assessment of a shaft screw for stabilization of the humeral condyle in dogs
The use of shaft screws for the management of incomplete ossification of the humeral condyle and humeral condylar fractures is associated with a relatively low rate of complications (compared to previous reports) and a good long-term outcome.

Suspected venous air embolism during urinary tract endoscopy in a standing horse
During cystoscopy, performed with air insufflation in a standing Argentinian gelding, the horse showed ataxia and fell to the ground with generalised muscular twitching, horizontal nystagmus, tachypnoea, and tachyarrhythmia.

Histoplasmosis In A Cat: Is House Disinfection Needed?
The cat wouldn't be contagious, but if there's a source of infection the cat and humans were exposed to (generally somewhere outdoors with bird or bat droppings), then I'd try to clean that up.

Are The Natural Flea And Tick Products That Contain Essential Oils Safe For Cats?
Because these are sold as repellents, rather than insecticides, they are not subject to EPA regulations, so safety and efficacy data are not required...

Vaccination And Descenting Surgery Considerations For Skunks; Rabies Virus Incubation And Shedding
There is a recent paper that had a bat that had rabies for at least 267 days before it became clinical. Incubation periods in wildlife species are *highly* variable.

Lawmakers Question FDA And USDA About Food From China; Problems With Country Of Origin Labels
There are plenty of caveats to country-of-origin labeling. Reading labels is useful, but it excludes a lot of relevant information.

      Interesting Client Expectations
We had a case when I was in vet school, young six-month-old German Shepherd pup HBC with a shattered humerus. Difficult to repair, would likely need amputation. Owners elected euthanasia. Students, interns, residents, and faculty all tried to convince owner to sign over dog, great teaching case, easy to place dog even if amputation was necessary. Repeatedly refused and insisted on euthanasia. Euthanasia performed.

Owners call 48 hours later and said that they had changed their mind, would allow surgery to go ahead. Explained (again) that euthanasia had been performed two days earlier. Owner said, "Isn't euthanasia just a shot? Just give another shot to reverse it!"

"Paging Dr. King. Dr. Stephen King to the morgue!"
