Bone Up on Bones (and more!) in the Surgery-Orthopedics Center
Veterinary orthopedics requires knowledge, a 3-dimensional mind, and the right equipment. VIN can't give you a 3D mind or a new set of bone plates, but the Surgery-Orthopedics Center contains lots of useful information about orthopedic diseases, procedures, and equipment.

The Surgery-Orthopedics Center can be reached through the About Page for the Orthopedics Message Board folder and the Specialty Centers page in the VIN Library.

Discussing Extractions With Clients
Even though they know rationally that the tooth is a rotten mess, somehow it's us evil vets that want to take their dogs teeth. If we'd just leave them alone, poor Fluffy could keep her teeth. I mean, how will she eat without them?

Ingestion of black walnut wood by dogs resulted in a clinical syndrome in which neurologic or musculoskeletal signs were most frequently reported, whereas ingestion of black walnuts or their hulls was most commonly associated with vomiting.

Chagas disease in a Texan horse with neurologic deficits
Histologically, trypanosome amastigotes morphologically similar to Trypanosoma cruzi, the agent of Chagas disease in humans and dogs, were sporadically detected within segments of the thoracic spinal cord surrounded by mild lymphoplasmacytic inflammation. Ancillary testing for Sarcocystis neurona, Neospora spp., Toxoplasma gondii, and Leishmania spp. was negative.

I believe that most of this is healed anterior synechiae from trauma. Cats are amazing!

Is There Any Way To End An IDEXX Rebate Agreement?
Your agreement should have a penalty clause that will tell you the cost of breaking the agreement. I bet you have to pay back part/all of what the company paid you up front -- plus a penalty.

Tips For Telling Clients Their Pet Has Chronic Renal Disease; Early Renal Disease Treatment For Dogs
I reserve the term kidney failure for end-stage cases. Now we are generally using the term "Chronic Kidney Disease". Such a small change, but it may actually go a long way to keep the owners from freaking out.

Kitten With Craniofacial Duplication (Diprosopus)
I seriously doubt that this kitten will have any kind of reasonable quality of life and will require intensive care. Reconstruction surgery is potentially possible but how well it would work is questionable...
