Things That Go *Bang* in the Night

A typical 4th of July celebration in the United States can be a dog's worst nightmare. If advising clients with firework-phobic dogs give you the shakes, check out the Medical FAQ on Storm Phobias and share the Fireworks Phobia article on VeterinaryPartner.com with your clients! Use VIN Search to find more information from conference proceedings, message board discussions, and other resources.

******************************************
Please note: The VIN office will be closed on Friday, July 4th so responses to calls and email may take a bit longer than usual. Thanks in advance for your patience!

If you have a truly urgent issue, Paul's phone is always on -- 530-757-6881.

Sharing is Caring... Except When it Comes to Zoonoses!
You and your staff are uniquely susceptible to exposure to zoonotic diseases, and clients expect you to be informed about zoonoses and public health issues.

The Zoonoses & Public Health Specialty Center can help you meet those expectations. Among the useful resources you'll find in this new center are:

  • Associate chapters on Public Health and Foreign Animal Diseases
  • Compendia & Guidelines
  • Disaster Preparedness Information
  • Links to FDA-NIH-USDA and FARAD resources and other outside websites
  • Client Handouts
  • Slide Shows
  • Pertinent Journals and Conference Proceedings

Find the Zoonoses & Public Health Specialty Center on the About Page for the Zoonoses/Public Health Message Board and the Specialty Centers section of the VIN Library.

SURVEY: Mental Health and Psychological Distress in the Veterinary Profession
Share your thoughts about mental health and psychological distress in the veterinary profession. This survey is brought to you by Randall Nett and Tracy Witte, researchers with the CDC and Auburn University, in cooperation with VIN.

The survey is run through Auburn University, but VIN has verified that the information collected is anonymous and will be used appropriately.

If you've participated in other surveys, but haven't seen the results yet, take a look at the Survey Results page.

BETA user? The VIN Survey Viewer on Beta.vin.com lets you view and evaluate survey results in ways beyond those provided in the write-up done by the VIN survey team.

Add Annotations from your Mobile Device
Adding annotations to images posted on the message boards makes it easy to direct the viewer's attention to a specific area of the image. Now you can add annotations to your images from your mobile device on BETA.

See the help document to learn how.

Note: The VIN Geeks have not been able to test this new feature on every device available, so please share your feedback if you have any trouble using it.

Feline aspergillosis
Sino-orbital aspergillosis (SOA) is an invasive mycosis that is being increasingly recognized, and is most commonly caused by a recently discovered pathogen Aspergillus felis. Sinonasal aspergillosis (SNA) can be invasive or noninvasive and is most commonly caused by Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus niger.

Canine nasal disease
Advanced imaging offers important advantages over traditional skull radiographs but is less widely available and more costly. Bacterial culture is seldom beneficial, and fungal culture is reserved for cases likely to have fungal rhinitis.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in West Highland white terriers
This article summarizes the current literature; describes the findings in physical examination, arterial blood gas analysis, bronchoscopy, bronchoalveolar lavage, diagnostic imaging, and histopathology; compares the canine and human diseases; gives an overview of potential treatments; and discusses biomarker research.

Using Body Condition Score To Estimate Ideal Weight For Dogs And Cats
I couldn't find a simple (or complicated) method to calculate an overweight dog's (or cat's) ideal weight based on its body condition score. Is there one?

Streamers Seen In The Splenic Vein During Dog's Ultrasound
This is an interesting phenomenon. In cases of IMHA, we see very dense streamers in the splenic vein, like a river full of ice blocks.

Clinician Suspects Pancreatitis In Cat With Clinical Signs: Pancreatic Lipase (fPL) Is Elevated But Ultrasound Is Normal
Unfortunately pancreatitis in both dogs and cats remains a difficult disease to diagnose. I prefer to have numerous tests -- lipase as well as ultrasound.
