The Fisher (Martes pennanti): Furtive Forest Friend, or Foe?
In Canada and the northern U.S. this mustelid has a bad reputation where small pets are concerned. But is it deserved? Join Sandra Mitchell, DVM, DABVP, Sunday at 8 p.m. ET to learn about the fisher's real lifestyle.

This session will be all text, no audio.

Cardiac Auscultation and Phonocardiography
Though one of the most widely used diagnostic techniques in veterinary medicine, cardiac auscultation can be hard to “perfect” without help. No more! The online version of Cardiac Auscultation and Phonocardiography makes it easy. And on VIN, it's FREE.

The text and library of accompanying sound recordings will aid your interpretation of normal and abnormal heart sounds and PCGs and may help with your everyday workup of cardiac cases. Look for the sound-players located throughout the text.

Browse chapters using the Table of Contents or Search by topic.

Want a version that's available offline? The book with CD is available from the VIN Bookstore. (Remember to login so you get your VIN Member discount.)

Endocrine Pancreas in Cats With Diabetes Mellitus
The presence of T and B lymphocytes combined tended to be more frequent in diabetic cats (n = 8 of 37; 21.6%) than control cats (n = 1 of 20; 5.0%). The results confirm previous observations that loss of ß cells but not a cells occurs in diabetic cats. Islet amyloidosis was present in diabetic cats but was not greater than in controls.

Quantitative PCR detection of feline morbillivirus in cat urine samples
Feline morbillivirus (FmoPV) is a new virus species. Its detection is important, since correlation has been reported between FmoPV virus infection and tubulointerstitial nephritis in cats.

Highly Comminuted, Articular Fractures of the Distal Antebrachium Managed by Pancarpal Arthrodesis in 8 Dogs
Surgical management by pancarpal arthrodesis is associated with a high risk of complication and a guarded prognosis for a full functional outcome.

Thromboembolism In A Cat Presenting With Discolored Nails And Sloughing Tissue On Toes
It looks like you've solved at least part of the mystery. Clearly the acute lameness in that left front limb followed by the toe lesion were due to a thromboembolus from the left atrium to the left foreleg and you were seeing resultant gangrene of that toe. It all makes sense in hindsight.

Owner Wants A Marijuana Prescription For His Dog: Can I Legally Write One?
The state laws cover only the prescribing of marijuana for *human* use. The laws all specify a physician-patient relationship. So while it might be okay for a physician to prescribe it for *you*, I think you'd be endangering your license to try to prescribe it for a veterinary patient.

How Should A Dog With Telangiectasia Ectatic Hepatocellular Adenoma Be Treated?
The treatment of these is controversial because they are often asymptomatic.

Farmer Is Facing Protests From People Who Want Him To Purchase Meat Instead Of Slaughtering Cow
Why didn't the reporter ask, "Do you think it's a double standard to suggest they eat someone else's slaughtered cow, in lieu of their own?"

Understanding Hospice and Palliative Care
Presenter: Kathleen Cooney, DVM, MS
August 11 - September 4, 2016

This course is designed to help veterinarians and veterinary staff to better understand the hospice philosophy and gain tools to implement directly into their hospice services. Course attendees will learn about the initial hospice consultation, the stages of dying, comfort care protocols, and case examples. Until certification exists for animal hospice providers, presentations like this can help guide providers on hospice best practices.

Surviving Euthanasia - Making it Better for Everyone
Presenter: Margie Scherk, DVM, DipABVP (Feline Practice)
July 13 - 30, 2016

In this presentation, we will learn to help clients provide home care for the purposes of comfort and to avoid side effects of their companion's illness. We'll discuss some tools for objective assessment of quality of life and different ways to help the client prioritize treatments. How do we know when a patient is "suffering"? When is the "right time" to assist the ending of a life? And, how do we, as healthcare providers, cope with this?

Check the World Clock Time Zone Converter to confirm class start times for your area.
