Outcome and Prognostic Factors for Canine Splenic Lymphoma Treated by Splenectomy (1995-2011)
Based on our sample population, splenectomy alone was an effective treatment for splenic lymphoma in cases with disease confined to the spleen. Chemotherapy may not improve survival in cases of lymphoma restricted to the spleen.

Long-Term Outcome of Zürich Cementless Total Hip Arthroplasty in 439 Cases
The frequency of complications was less than 20% in juvenile and adult dogs and the frequency was not different across age groups. Complications were primarily related to the change (increase) in body condition score after surgery. Revision was successful in almost all dogs.

Transthecal Arthroscopy of the Palmar Distal Interphalangeal Joint in the Horse: A Cadaver Study
The transthecal approach provides improved visualization of the palmar aspect of the DIPJ compared to the conventional blind approach and may be useful in nonseptic conditions of the DIPJ. However, because of the creation of communication with the DFTS, use of the transthecal approach for suspected synovial sepsis of the DIPJ may be contraindicated.

Hypothyroid Dog Is Vomiting On Soloxine (Levothyroxine): What Alternatives Are Available?
The problem with Synthroid may be the expense from having to give multiple pills to accommodate the dose for some dogs, as humans take less supplementation than dogs seem to.

The Effect Of Chronic Periodontal Disease On Body Systems; Why Perioperative Antibiotics Are Not Indicated For Most Dental Procedures
The periodontal pocket may be host to hundreds, if not thousands, of microorganisms. No antibiotic gets them all. So use of peri-operative antibiotics only alters the balance of power and ensures that the bugs that get into the blood stream during surgery are the resistant ones.

Very Strange Looking Cystic Calculus
A cystotomy was performed this week to remove this single strange-looking calculus; please find attached a radiograph of the stone after removal, a photo of the stone intact and a photo of the stone sectioned in half to expose the center.

Knuckle Bone in Esophagus
The application of the sensor was easy and apparently painless; a mild local erythema after sensor removal was found in 5/10 dogs. Flash glucose monitoring system is a simple and promising glucose monitoring system that seems accurate for clinical use in diabetic dogs.

VIN Word Nerds Please Help...
So beginning with a news story that we heard over the weekend involving Jon Stewart and what the news reader was calling a "bull" that had gotten loose from a slaughter house and was rampaging through a college campus somewhere, my husband and I started wondering over the weekend...

If a castrated male bovine is a steer rather than a bull (and I submit that it was probably a steer, not a bull that got loose from the slaughter house, but regardless), why is a neutered male cat still a tom?

And why do cattle, horses, and pigs have different names for their neonates/pre-adolescent offspring than do the adult/post-adolescents? Why is a filly a filly and when does she become a mare?
