Looking for Your Message Board Post?
Subscribing is the easiest way to keep track of message board discussions and stay updated on new posts. Now, by default, your preferences are set to auto-subscribe when you make any new posts or replies in the medical folders.

You can change this setting at any time in your MyVIN preferences. Learn how.

If you choose not to auto-subscribe you can still easily find your posts and favorite discussions with MyActivities (Ctrl-M), which allows you to track and manage all of your message board and search activities.

The My Recent section on the main message board page can also help you locate your message board posts quickly.

Access MyActivities through the icon at the top right or link in the footer of most VIN pages -- or simply press CTRL-M (Control and M keys simultaneously) from anywhere on VIN.

The My Recent section on the main message board page also can help you locate your message board posts quickly.

Note: To use MyActivities you'll want to make sure your browser is set to allow pop ups from VIN. Learn how.

My typical response is to start with, "Well, bear in mind that Dr. Google is online because he or she flunked out of vet school."

Financial Considerations For Adding Birds And Small Exotic Mammals To Canine/Feline Practice
The short answer is that you get into avian/exotic medicine for the love of it, and eventually it will contribute to your income. However, you'll take so much extra time to handle the cases and educate the owners, that it's going to be a negative contribution at the beginning.

Backyard Poultry Medicine
May 20 - June 22, 2016

In recent years, more people are starting to raise small flocks of poultry in backyard urban settings. When these birds become injured or ill, the owners are turning to their local family veterinarian for assistance, even though many small animal practitioners have very little to no experience with poultry or with how to treat animals that are being used in food production. This course is intended to help those veterinarians and their technicians become more familiar with diagnosing and treating conditions of poultry commonly encountered in the backyard setting.

What matters in the end: Geriatric Medicine, Euthanasia and Compassion Fatigue
July 5 - 29, 2016

Although all veterinarians agree that old age is not a disease - it is a common reason why many families decide to euthanize a pet. Many pet owners will not seek out an actual diagnosis but the myriad of ailments fall under the excuse of "old age." Understanding how the body changes as an animal ages is important so that we can educate owners and treat pets appropriately. Doing so earlier in the pet's life may allow for a longer quality of life and prevent premature euthanasia.
