How can you Mend a Broken Heart? With the Help of Cardiovascular Resources on VIN!

Put yourself to the test with these interactive medical case studies. Mark Kittleson has generously shared content from his Case Studies in Small Animal Cardiovascular Medicine.

Select a case, formulate a diagnostic plan, and take the quiz to get feedback on your diagnostic choices. Each case is linked to the appropriate chapter of the online version of Small Animal Cardiovascular Medicine.

If your heart is aching for more, explore the Cardiology Specialty Center in the Specialty Center section of the VIN library and check out the Procedures and Techniques page.

Here are some additional useful Cardiology Resources in the VIN Library:

Vinblastine as a second rescue for the treatment of canine multicentric lymphoma in 39 cases (2005 to 2014)

A Novel Imaging System Distinguishes Neoplastic from Normal Tissue During Resection of Soft Tissue Sarcomas and Mast Cell Tumors in Dogs
The imaging system correctly distinguished cancer from normal tissue in 93/101 biopsies (92%). Using histology as the reference, the sensitivity and specificity of the imaging system for identification of cancer in biopsies were 92% and 92%, respectively. There were 10/19 (53%) dogs which exhibited transient facial erythema soon after injection of the imaging agent which responded to, but was not consistently prevented by, intravenous diphenhydramine.

Evaluation of cytology collection techniques and prevalence of Malassezia yeast and bacteria in claw folds of normal and allergic dogs
There were significantly higher numbers of Malassezia organisms and extra cellular cocci retrieved from samples collected with a toothpick compared to other methods. Tape preparations were associated with significantly more debris and corneocytes and impression smears with significantly more nuclear streaming.

Is It Common Practice For Veterinary Technicians, And Not The Veterinarian, To Perform Ultrasound Scans?
A knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology is needed when doing an ultrasound study. A tech can make standard images, but disease often alters the anatomy or physiology. On the other hand, we all had to start somewhere. Learning from reading, associating with smarter people, and making mistakes can, over time, improve the tech's ability so that he is a valuable member of the veterinary imaging team.

Owner Bathes Dog Using Laundry Detergent: Is This Safe?
Not only is this type of detergent not meant for prolonged skin contact (potential irritant reaction), it is likely to dry the skin and hair because of the way it is formulated.

What Recourse Do Veterinary Technician Students Have After Their Vet Tech Schools Close?
I am astounded that there is no recourse -- no path to the VTNE or to completing a program -- when this is clearly going to be an ongoing issue for many programs.

Towards a Sustainable Clinical Career: The Neuroscience of Clinicianship
March 12 - April 19, 2017
Presenter(s): Michele Gaspar, DVM, DABVP (Feline Practice), MA, LPC

This course is designed to address core skills that are critically necessary for sustainable and effective clinical practice. These include: Self-observation/mindfulness; empathy; resilience/self-compassion/boundaries; and attentiveness. Until recently, these have been erroneously considered as unimportant "soft skills" that are beyond the scope of traditional veterinary medical education. However, they are increasingly recognized as essential in enabling a clinician to flourish in his or her professional and personal life. This course will provide skills necessary to engage with clinical practice in healthier ways.
