Journal Club is Back!
Evidenced-based medicine entails applying the most current research to our medical recommendations. However, few of us were formally trained to critically assess and use the information presented in scientific papers.

The VIN Journal Club meets the first Thursday of each month to discuss important papers. Don't have access to the featured journal? We'll arrange to get you a copy of the article so you can still participate.

Journal club is open to the entire VIN Community; come join the conversation! Discussions are led by a different VINner each month (often a VIN Consultant, but anyone can volunteer).

Next session: Thursday, February 4 - 1 p.m. ET
Join Anne Elizabeth Katherman, DVM, MS, DACVIM, to discuss a neurology article.
Lowrie M, Garden OA, Hadjivassiliou M, Harvey RJ, et al. The Clinical and Serological Effect of a Gluten-Free Diet in Border Terriers with Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome. J Vet Intern Med. 2015 Oct-Dec;29(6):1564-8.
Take the opportunity to review some Clinical Study Design and Methods Terminology before the session.

Can’t make the live session? Don’t worry – the transcript will be available the next day on the Journal Club page and the Recent Rounds section.

Ask Membership Services:
We share a computer at the clinic. How can I tell who's logged in?

In the upper right corner of most pages on VIN, you’ll see "Welcome" along with the name of the individual who is logged in.

If you’re within the message boards, the Post New and Reply windows will say "Logged in as…" with the member’s name.

Most VIN pages have a Logout button near the top right. Logging out when you finish a session will keep you and your colleagues from accidentally impersonating each other. If you are composing a new post or replying to an existing one, you have an option in the center of that window to "click here to change user."

If you need further assistance, the membership services team is here to help! Email vingram@vin.com any time or call Monday - Friday, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. PT:

  • Toll Free: 800-700-4636

Familial cardiomyopathy in Norwegian Forest cats
Myocyte hypertrophy, myofibre disarray, and interstitial fibrosis typical of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy were present in 7/8 cats, but endomyocardial fibrosis suggestive of restrictive cardiomyopathy was also present in the same cats. Evaluation of the Diagnostic Accuracy of Conventional 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional Computed Tomography for Assessing Canine Sacral and Pelvic Fractures by Radiologists, Orthopedic Surgeons, and Veterinary Medical Students
3D-CT was a more time-efficient technique for evaluation of traumatic sacral and pelvic injuries compared with 2D-CT in all evaluator groups irrespective of experience level reading orthopedic CT studies. However, for radiologists and surgeons, 2D-CT was the more accurate technique for evaluating sacral and pelvic fractures.

ASPCA's Create a Protocol Tool: Parvo
This free tool from the ASPCA is designed for shelter veterinarians, staff, and volunteers and is a great resource for anyone who helps with standard operating procedures and shelter animal health and wellness.

To get your customized protocol, you'll be asked a short series of questions that will take from 5 to 10 minutes. Once you submit your answers, you'll receive an email with your protocol in PDF format.

Find the tool in the Websites section of the Shelter Medicine Information Center. Discuss it with your fellow shelter veterinarians and other VINners here.

Does Increased Facebook Traffic Correlate With Increased Business?
I have had a Facebook page for my clinic for years where we post pictures of our patients weekly, link to our website, promote blogs (1 or 2 per month), and promote our community events. I just don't know if this is a good business model or a warm and fuzzy thing to make our already established clients feel good (I realise there is value in that alone).

What I do not do yet, but will start tomorrow, is ask my clients and new clients what they think.

I am interested in people's opinions on this.
