VIN is Colleagues Helping Colleagues
VIN isn't a "you pays your dues and you gets an instant answer" world. VIN is VINners -- members, VIN Reps, Associate Editors, and Consultants -- helping each other with their cases and their lives.

If you have experience and knowledge that can help your fellow VINners with cases, practice management, and life, speak up!

We're all in this together, and we learn from each other.

Some tips to help you get started:

Pediatrics and Geriatrics Specialty Center
Both very young and older patients can be uniquely challenging to treat.

Visit the Pediatrics and Geriatrics Specialty Center to find information on topics ranging from Kitten Kindergarten to Geriatric Dentistry.

Resources in the center have been gathered from:

  • VIN Medical FAQs
  • VIN Rounds
  • Journal and Proceedings articles
  • Client Handouts
  • Associate
  • and much more

If you have ideas for materials and information that you'd like to see included in this or any other specialty center, send them to Library@vin.com.

Serological cross-reactivity of three commercial in-house immunoassays for detection of Dirofilaria immitis antigens with Spirocerca lupi in dogs with benign esophageal spirocercosis
These results demonstrate serological cross-reactivity between D. immitis and S. lupi in blood samples of dogs. In areas where the distributions of both nematodes overlap, this cross-reactivity should be considered when dog are screened for heartworm disease.

Dogs Entering the United States from Rabies-Endemic Countries, 2011-2012
Confinement agreements were issued for nearly 2800 unimmunized dogs that entered the United States during 1 June 2011-31 May 2012, the majority of which travelled to the United States by air and without any seasonal pattern in import volume. Over 60% of these animals were puppies <3 months of age and included a wide variety of breeds. The dogs arrived from 81 countries.

Chronic use of maropitant for the management of vomiting and inappetence in cats with chronic kidney disease: a blinded placebo-controlled clinical trial
There was a statistically significant decrease in vomiting in cats with CKD that received maropitant. Cats that received maropitant did not have statistically significant differences in appetite scores, activity scores, weight, or serum creatinine compared with placebo.

Evaluation Of Radiographs In Dog With Hypercementosis, Ankylosis, And Tooth Resorption
All of us would have used some colorful language upon seeing those radiographs. There is a lot of hypercementosis, ankylosis, and tooth resorption and each of these makes extraction magnitudes of order more challenging.

Dystocia In A Burmese Python
We soaked her 20-30 minutes daily in warm water and gave her SC fluid therapy. Surgery was our last resort as we don't have snake specialists on the island. We eventually administered oxytocin and provided a laying box. To our relief, she laid her eggs the following day.

Pain Control In Head Trauma Cases: Don't Opioids Increase Intracranial Pressure?
Intracranial pressure is not an important outcome by itself. That is, we really don't care what the ICP is. We care if the patient lives, dies, or suffers neurologic disability. And, so far, we don't have any good studies showing for sure if patient outcome is affected by opioids one way or another.

Young Cat With Intestinal Foreign Body: Interpreting Abdominal Radiographs
Based on the radiographs, I am concerned about a mechanical obstruction.

Clients say the darnedest things...
Yes, I spent 34 minutes on the phone with a client that was extremely upset that the other doctor in the hospital had said her hamster was depressed. (The hamster hadn't eaten in a week and died with a rectal prolapse.) The client was irate that the other vet would imply that hamster was unhappy with his home.
