Can We Talk?
Some days are harder than others. Talking one-on-one with a sympathetic colleague can make a big difference. Dr. Michele Gaspar, VIN Feline Medicine consultant and one of the VIN Foundation’s Vets4Vets program’s psychotherapists, is offering evening office hours via telephone Monday through Friday, from 10 p.m. - 11 pm ET. Two 30-minute slots are available each day. To arrange a call, email michele@vinfoundation.org.

What are VIN Rounds?
VIN Rounds are interactive learning opportunities covering a range of clinical medicine and practice management topics. Experts present subject matter and lead the conversation while attendees ask questions and share their own experiences.

Most Rounds take place on Sunday evenings, but there are also Rounds on other days with more specific focus:

  • AAFP and VECCS Rounds focus on feline and emergency medicine topics, respectively.
  • The VIN Journal Club leads you through analyzing a journal article.
  • How-To Rounds help you get the most out of VIN tools and features.
  • Last but not least, if you need to bounce ideas off your colleagues or let off some pressure, the Tuesday evening Venting Over a Venti sessions may be just what the doctor ordered.

Rounds are open to all VIN members. It's fun to attend the live sessions. Can't attend? A replay (recording) and written transcript are always available soon after.

Physiological and Behavioral Responses of Horses to Wither Scratching and Patting the Neck When Under Saddle
Wither scratching produced a significantly longer duration of relaxed-type behaviors. Wither scratching could be a useful tool to help a horse relax while under saddle.

Brachycephalic Syndrome
Stenotic nares, aberrant turbinates, nasopharyngeal collapse, soft palate elongation and hyperplasia, laryngeal collapse, and left bronchus collapse are being described as the most common associated anomalies.

Pathophysiology of humeral fractures in a sample of dairy heifers
The CT and histological findings were consistent with a diagnosis of osteoporosis. Increased osteoclastic resorption of bone associated with calcium mobilisation for lactation, and periods of copper deficiency may contribute to bone weakening.

Ideas And Resources For Returning To Wildlife Medicine After 9 Years In Small Animal Practice
There are at least 350-400 full time jobs in North America in one aspect or another of wildlife conservation/health/medicine. There are probably 700-800 wildlife medicine jobs worldwide. Jobs are definitely there, and more will likely be coming. But, they are not easily found.

Dog With Bufo Toad Poisoning: Treatment Of Ventricular Arrhythmia
We would presume that the effects are similar to digoxin toxicity (cardiac glycosides) and possibly class 1 antiarrhythmic drugs. This might explain why lidocaine (which is also a sodium channel blocker) might not work well.

Why Does Lower Airway Disease In Cats And Dogs Cause An Increase In Expiratory Effort?
On *exhalation*, the now-stretched lung passively (in health) deflates like a balloon. If there is small airway inflammation, secretions, bronchospasm, etc., then the abdomen has to contract actively in an attempt to force exhalation.

How Hard Should I Push Clients To Do Workups On Sick Pets?
I think we all have different ways to try to deal with this. Here are my thoughts...
